Obama and Ian Somerhalder talk green energy

When he's not playing a debonair immortal on the hit series "The Vampire Diaries," Ian Somerhalder is busy promoting environmental initiatives and sustainable reform. On Thursday morning, he received his most prominent audience yet as part of a group of celebrities invited to breakfast with President Barack Obama.?

?

?

The 33-year-old was one of many famous faces invited to attend the breakfast, part of the Obama re-election campaign?s ?Young America Effort." According to The Hollywood Reporter, celebs taking part included Jeremy Renner, Dianna Agron, Zachary Quinto, Ben McKenzie, Jessica Alba, Bryan Greenberg, Adam Rodriguez, Zach Braff, Brandon Routh, Jared Leto, Kal Penn and Sophia Bush.

?

Agron tweeted, "(The President is) maybe the only man I truly get nervous around. Worth the early wake up call," while Alba wrote, "Got up bright & early to hear Barack Obama speak with an awesome group."

?

Here's hoping that such a meeting with the president was only the first for Somerhalder. While he's better-known for his acting, the guy has a promising career ahead of him in environmental activism as well. Besides his current role as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, he's also engaged in tremendous outreach through his Ian Somerhalder Foundation.

?

"There's Generation X. There's Generation Y. This generation is Generation Extinction," he said last year. "This generation holds that in their hands ? the responsibility of it, and the power to change it. They have the ability to make the changes for themselves and for their environment. It's pretty badass, if you think about how much they can do."
