T-Mobile USA files request for FCC-mandated ... - Know Your Cell

T-Mobile USA today petitioned the FCC to possibly mandate the interoperability of all U.S. 4G LTE wireless networks in the 700 MHz band. The nation's fourth largest carrier argues that such a move would encourage LTE roaming, foster competition, and help boost public-safety, which also plans to use 700MHz.

The Federal Communications Commission next week will consider a notice of proposed rule-making that examines the possibility of interoperability. Right now it is still unclear though if some sort of interoperability is even possible due to the different band classes found within 700MHz.

T-Mobile, for its part, wants 700MHz interoperability to help make roaming easier for small carriers like T-Mobile, which plans to deploy its own LTE network inside their AWS holdings. Striking LTE roaming deals with carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless would be extremely important for the company and other, smaller carriers.

Predictably, AT&T and Verizon have argued and lobbied against an FCC mandated interoperability rule for the 700MHz band. The carriers also claim there are technical reasons against such a requirement.

The FCC is due to examine whether or not interoperability is possible from a technical standpoint over the next few weeks.
