Golf:
Defending champion Jay Woodson of Richmond ? part of the ?The Big Break Mexico? reality show on The Golf Channel ? and fellow pro Mike Gooden shared the lead after one round in the 72-hole State Open of Virginia.
Both fired 6-under-par 65s at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.
John David Sanderson of Suffolk, who plays for the Richmond Spiders and starred for Summit Christian Academy, and 2012 state senior champ Tim Lewis of Hampton were among those tied for 23rd at 71.

Virginia Tech rising junior Trevor Cone lost in the round of 32 in match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the Laurel Hills Golf Club in Lorton. He lost 2 and 1 to Oklahoma State?s Ian Davis.

Cone birdied the first hole to take the lead, but Davis took the lead for good on the par-4, 500-yard fifth hole. Cone never trailed by more than two holes.
Tennis:
Top-seeded Catherine Bellis of Atherton, Calif., and No. 2 Katerina Stewart of Miami were among the players advancing to Friday's 10 a.m. quarterfinals in the annual U.S. Tennis Association Girls 16 Clay Court Championships at Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club.
Bellis will meet unseeded Kylie McKenzie of Anthem, Ariz., while Stewart will face No. 7 Angela Kulikov of Sun Valley, Calif.
The semifinals are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, with the final scheduled for Sunday.
