Three children are safe after a 36-hour standoff with an armed man in Trenton, New Jersey was resolved early Sunday, police said.
Lt. Steve Varn of Trenton Police said the hostage situation ended shortly before 5 a.m. ET, adding that the area around the home where it took place is now secure.
He declined to comment on the status of the hostage-taker, but a news conference is schedule for 10 a.m. ET.
Earlier, he declined to comment on reports that a woman and child had been killed in the home.
Police were alerted to the situation on Grand Street in Trenton at 2:47 pm on Friday, Varn said. The man had barricaded himself inside the house with ?multiple? hostages.
A mother and child were dead inside the house, law enforcement sources earlier told NBC News affiliate WCAU. At least two of the hostages inside the structure are children, the sources told WCAU.

Officers entered the home on Friday before retreating when the man brandished a gun, authorities have said. Homes in the surrounding area were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Trenton police were supported by state police and FBI as well as the city?s arson and bomb and canine units, Varn said.
