WWE star John Cena takes a stand against bullying

(AP) ? Most people wouldn't dare call chiseled WWE superstar John Cena any names, let alone "a bowl of Fruity Pebbles."

But in the lead up to their WrestleMania 28 "Once in a Lifetime" match Sunday in Miami, that's exactly what The Rock told Cena he looked like.

Instead of getting upset, Cena said he turned the situation around by contacting the cereal maker, now he's on "three million boxes of the stuff."

While it was done in typical WWE trash-talk fashion, Cena says the pressure can get to you.

"I'm one of those guys that gets cheered, but also gets booed. Those who don't like me, severely don't like me," Cena told the Associated Press on Friday. "Usually your first instinct is to lash out at these people. ... but I believe you always need to turn a negative into a positive."

Heavily involved in the Be-A-Star anti-bullying campaign, Cena is not just a voice for the cause, he also says he was a victim.

According the former WWE Heavyweight champion, he was bullied as a kid because he loved rap and wore hip-hop clothing in a town where it wasn't popular. He started lifting weights to protect himself.

"By the time I was 15, I was a built kid, and the comments didn't come so often, and the people making fun of me sort of fell by the wayside," Cena said.

While most of it was talk, Cena doesn't see much of a difference when it comes to hurtful remarks.

"The introduction of social media pretty much gives everyone a voice, but unfortunately, people choose to use that voice in a negative way," Cena said.

Cena wants young people to know that not everyone is going to like you for who you are: "The best way to get back at them is to put a smile on your face and do whatever you can to succeed."

While he's in the business of physical confrontations and verbal assaults, he said insults still affect you. He also wants victims to know that, so Cena refuses to block anyone or edit his Twitter account.

"There's a lot of negative stuff on there and some of it is personal," he said. "When you're a kid that feels that everything is coming down on you, you can look and see that this truly does happen to everybody."

The former WWE heavyweight champion also addressed the role of judging people by the clothes they wear, namely the recent debate over hoodies.

Cena doesn't feel they make a negative statement, saying: "I've never seen clothing as a problem."

Trayvon Martin's death has sparked a debate about whether hooded sweatshirts present a negative image. While Cena didn't speak specifically about the case, he said that what people wear isn't the main concern: 'It's the demeanor."

Seventeen-year-old Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Fla., last month by a neighborhood watch volunteer who has claimed self-defense and has not yet been arrested.

The Be-A-Star foundation co-founded by the WWE and The Creative Coalition.

BCG?s report went on to say that developing G-20 countries already have 800 million Internet users, which is more than all the developed G-20 countries combined. Ignore advice on 'Idol'? Singers better be sure

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

"American Idol" contestants Heejun Han and Phillip Phillips both disregarded the mentors' advice on March 21, but it paid off for one of them.

?American Idol? provides each of its finalists the opportunity to listen to and learn from experts every week. But that doesn?t mean that the contestants take advantage of it. Instead, many choose to ignore the fashion tips, song guidance and general notes from the mentors, guests and judges.

For some, like Phillip Phillips, going their own way has been the right move. Others (Heejun Han!) continue to risk the wrath of those in power by dismissing their opinions. But there doesn?t need to be confusion about which way to go. Here?s a quick reminder to the remaining singers about handling ?suggestions,? helpful or otherwise.

It?s OK to ignore the feedback ...
1. ... because you know who you are as an artist.
Scotty McCreery was urged several times last season to sing something other than country songs. He smiled, nodded and kept singing country songs. He won. Hard to argue that he wasn?t smart to trust his talent.

Last week, Jimmy Iovine told Phillip to leave his guitar behind, and Tommy Hilfiger tried to give him a makeover. He nodded politely, ignored both suggestions and got nothing but praise for doing so. Elise Testone entered in a more precarious position and likewise was successful despite ignoring most of the advice she was given. When you know who you are and what you can do, trust yourself.

2. ... when it comes from Jimmy Iovine or the guest mentors.
Jimmy has been a very good addition to the show and provides a tiny dose of realism in a show that?s often all about the positive. But as far as his opinions go, he?s like the local official who is always overruled. He can make pronouncements, but the guys who count are the three judges on the appeals court named Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez?and Steven Tyler. Don?t listen to Jimmy if it will put you in conflict with the big bosses.

Similarly, Tommy Hilfiger is on the show to sell product, not to make you a better singer. If his clothes are going to make you self-conscious onstage and sing worse, don?t listen to him. Now that Paula Abdul is gone, how many people really care how fashion-forward you look anyway? And did going with his suggestions do Erika Van Pelt any good?

3. ?... when it?s the opposite of what they told you last week.
This perennially kills some of the younger singers. They?re so eager to please that they do whatever they?re told, which pulls them in a million different directions and leaves them without an identity. DeAndre Brackensick, we're talking to you here.

4. ... when the advice is dumb.
Pia Toscano was an early favorite last year. Then the judges mentioned that they?d like to see her sing something besides a ballad. She gave them what they wanted and sang ?River Deep, Mountain High.? She got the boot.

Contestants have to keep in mind that sometimes the judges are being profound, and sometimes they?re talking to hear the sound of their own voices. Don?t get kicked off the show just because Randy felt the need to say something after five minutes of silence and you took him seriously.

It?s not OK to ignore the feedback ...
1. ... when you?re rude about it.
Look, it?s easy to get a big head because you?re on this hit show singing for millions of fans. You may think you know it all and that any criticism is merely a speed bump on the yellow brick road to stardom. In other words, you may look like Elise for the first couple of weeks of the finals.

But keep in mind that guys like Jimmy wouldn?t have given you the time of day six months ago, and now all these big shots are trying to help you out. Take the advice or don?t, but don?t act like you?re above it all.

2. ... when you waste their time.
It?s perfectly fine for Heejun to stick with his comedy/music act when its his turn to perform. That?s his persona. Besides, Taylor Hicks won by being an entertainer in season five, so there is some precedent for success here. But it?s not OK for him to blow off the mentoring sessions and turn them into his comic foil every week. All that does is make those people mad. Every now and then, every contestant needs to at least pretend to listen and feed the egos of those above them. Which leads us to ...

3. ... when it angers the judges.
It?s one thing to annoy the mentors. But getting the judges on your bad side is bad news. Plenty of viewers base their decisions on what that trio says. So for Heejun, it was smart to make nice with Steven on Wednesday. You don?t want him sniping at you from the stand. He can make your life miserable, and the sympathy votes only take you so far.

4. ... when it?s good advice
Randy, J.Lo, Steven, Jimmy and everyone else on the show may be there mostly because of casting. But as it's pointed out every week, the famouse faces?all have been successful in the music business and know what it takes to reach the top. Shockingly enough, sometimes they know what they?re talking about.

In particular, listen to J.Lo. When she talks about engaging with the audience, she's got just a smidge of experience in putting those suggestions into practice for herself. And in general, taking the judges notes on small things makes them feel good about themselves. If they're feeling good, odds are favorable that they'll say things that make you feel good as well.

When do you think the "Idol" hopefuls should ignore the advice of the judges and mentors? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

KY3: Does Your Contractor Carry Workers Comp Insurance? You ...

On Wednesday, March 28, Contact KY3?s Jay Scherder highlighted the need for consumers to do their homework when hiring a contractor. In Missouri, construction businesses are generally required to carry workers compensation insurance for the protection of employees, businesses, and consumers.??Active and current workers compensation insurance is a requirement for membership in the Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield. Many non-members fail to carry the insurance that is required by Missouri law. In some cases, these contractors may knowingly be in violation of the law. But in most cases, they simply misread the requirements of the law, or were misinformed by someone else who misread the requirements.

In the video below, Scherder interviews HBA President Matt Bailey and Past President Rusty MacLachlan for the story.

For more information, see the Missouri Department of Labor?s Division of Workers Compensation video: ?5 Myths of Work Comp.?

The HBA of Greater Springfield upholds the professionalism of the industry, helping enforce workers compensation insurance requirements by making them a requirement of membership. The HBA has worked closely with the Division of Workers Comp to better clarify, enforce, and uphold professional standards. Recent steps have included:

  • In?2009?the HBA initiated meetings with local permitting jurisdictions and the Missouri Attorney General in an effort to see current Missouri Workers Compensation Law be more consistently enforced at the local and state levels.
  • In 2010 & 2011, to help educate municipal licensing officers, the HBA worked closely with Administrative Law Judge Margaret Holden to prepare and deliver a series of?joint presentations?to audiences of city clerks and other city and county officials, as well as construction industry audiences.
  • In an effort to provide consumers with a simple way to verify their contractors? compliance with state law, the division has now developed an on-line tool that allows anyone to verify work comp coverage. It is a valuable proof of insurance tool which could be used by contractors, company employees, government agencies and homeowners to protect themselves when working with construction related businesses. Research and Markets: Ethiopia ? Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband ...

DUBLIN?(BUSINESS WIRE)?

Dublin ? Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/705abb49/ethiopia_telecom) has announced the addition of the ?Ethiopia ? Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts? report to their offering.

?Ethiopia ? Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts?

Management Contract with France Telecom Pays off for ETC

This annual report provides a comprehensive overview of trends and developments in Ethiopia?s telecommunications market.

Subjects Covered Include:

  • One of the least developed but fastest growing mobile markets in the region;
  • The monopoly telecom provider in the country;
  • Key statistics;
  • Market and industry overviews;
  • Government policies affecting the telecoms industry;
  • Regulatory environment;
  • Plans for privatisation and market liberalisation;
  • Infrastructure development;
  • Convergence (voice/data, fixed/wireless/mobile).
  • Internet and broadband development and growth;
  • Mobile data services;
  • Broadband, including 3G mobile;

Average Revenue per User (ARPU).Ethiopia is the last country in Africa allowing its national telco, ETC a monopoly on all telecom services including fixed, mobile, Internet and data communications. This monopolistic control has stifled innovation and retarded expansion. The government tries to encourage foreign investment in a broad range of industries by allowing foreigners up to 100% equity ownership. However, there is no official schedule for the privatisation of the national carrier and the introduction of competition, but once this happens, the potential to satisfy unmet demand in all service sectors is huge. A management contract with France Telecom has led to dramatically improved performance by ETC and is seen as a first step towards privatisation.

Market Highlights:

  • ETC transforms under management contract with France Telecom;
  • Detailed profile of the monopoly service provider in all market sectors;
  • Financial results 2010/11;
  • Strong revenue growth despite drastic price cuts;
  • Forecasts for mobile and Internet markets to 2013 and 2016;
  • Multi-billion US$ investments planned before 2012.

Companies Covered in This Report:

  • Ethio-Telecom (Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation, ETC)
  • EthioNet (ETC)
  • Ethio-Mobile (ETC)

Key Topics Covered:

1. Executive summary

2. Key statistics

3. Overview of Ethiopia?s telecom market

4. Regulatory environment

Health impact, interplay of diet soft drinks and overall diet unravelled

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? Are diet sodas good or bad for you? The jury is still out, but a new study sheds light on the impact that zero-calorie beverages may have on health, especially in the context of a person's overall dietary habits.

For the average person, the scientific evidence can seem confusing. A number of studies have implicated diet beverage consumption as a cause of cardiovascular disease. However, others have suggested such drinks may be a viable tactic for people who are trying to lose or control their weight.

Either way, most previous research has tended to focus either on people's drinking patterns and preferences, or their overall dietary habits -- in other words, most studies have failed to tease apart how those two aspects interact to affect people's health.

To address this problem, a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill examined not only people's beverage consumption patterns but also the diets of those who consume diet and sugar-sweetened beverages. The findings appear in the April issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Kiyah Duffey, Ph.D., study author and research assistant professor of nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, said that similar to previous studies, the new analysis found that people who consumed diet beverages tended to be less healthy than people who did not consume them.

"However, there was an important interplay between overall diet and what people drink," Duffey said. "It is important that people consider the entirety of their diet before they consider switching to or adding diet beverages, because without doing so they may not realize the health benefits they were hoping to see."

Researchers studied data collected over 20 years from more than 4,000 young adults who participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

In terms of eating habits, participants fell into two groups: people who ate what researchers dubbed a "prudent" diet (one with more fruit, fish, whole grains, nuts and milk) and individuals who consumed a "western" diet (which had higher amounts of fast food, meat and poultry, pizza and snacks).

People who were healthiest tended to be those who ate a prudent diet and did not consume diet beverages. They had a lower risk of high waist circumference, high triglyceride levels and metabolic syndrome (22 percent, 28 percent and 36 percent lower, respectively, than people who ate a western diet and did not drink diet beverages). But the second healthiest group was individuals with a prudent diet who also consumed diet beverages.

In contrast, individuals who consumed the western diet had increased risk of heart disease, regardless of whether or not they drank diet beverages.

The UNC researchers found that many dietary factors contributed to a person's overall health. Without taking diet beverage consumption into account, people who ate the prudent diet had significantly better cholesterol and triglyceride profiles and significantly lower risks of hypertension and metabolic syndrome than those who ate the western diet.

Duffey added: "Our study confirms the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association and many weight-loss programs, which suggest people drink these beverages as a way to cut calories and lose or control weight, but only in the context of the whole diet."

Analysis: French shooting case shows counterterrorism limits

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mohamed Merah, the French gunman who killed Jewish children and French soldiers and then died in a firefight with police this month, was hardly an unknown quantity to intelligence and law enforcement officials on both sides of the Atlantic.

Merah made two trips to Afghanistan between 2010 and 2012, and was detained by U.S. forces during the first. He had a record of moderately serious criminal activities in France. He was even interviewed by France's domestic spy agency, the Central Directorate for Domestic Intelligence, or DCRI, in November 2011, following his trips to South Asia.

With so many red flags, how was he able to roam the streets freely - and assemble a formidable cache of weapons - in France?

U.S. officials have declined to say why Merah was detained in Afghanistan or what happened to him then, although at some point he was sent back to France.

U.S. officials certainly had enough intelligence about his visits to militants in Afghanistan to put him on the "no fly" list, the most restrictive of a set of U.S. databases designed to monitor and control potentially dangerous suspects.

Being on that list, Merah would have been barred from boarding planes that take off and land in the United States, as well as aircraft that overfly U.S. territory.

Merah's case is just the latest to demonstrate the limits of intelligence gathering and analysis, and the use of that information against potentially, but not actively, violent suspects living in a democratic society, say current and former U.S. and European officials and private experts on counter-terrorism policy.

"The ability of Western law enforcement or intelligence services to prevent terrorist attacks from fellow citizens who have settled back home without acting on their intent to attack is fraught with complications and limitations," said Juan Zarate, a former senior adviser on counter-terrorism issues to former President George W. Bush.

LEGAL LIMITS, LOW PROFILE

"For all the concerns about law enforcement overreach after 9/11, the reality is that the detention of suspect citizens absent an overt act of criminality - merely based on associations or speech - is not legal," he said.

Zarate noted that while legal systems in France and Spain give authorities "much more flexibility" to pick up and hold suspects on looser evidence of involvement with militants, "there are still limitations dictated by law and democratic practices."

Zarate recalled another case of a "lone wolf" militant with many parallels to Merah's. In 2009, Carlos Bledsoe killed an Army private and wounded another soldier outside a military recruiting office in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Before then, Bledsoe had traveled to Yemen. There, according to testimony by his father to a U.S. congressional committee, he was arrested for overstaying his visa and held in a political prison, where he was interviewed by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"He returned home, was monitored, but ultimately woke up one morning and decided to kill Army recruiters," Zarate said.

Jean-Louis Bruguiere, a former magistrate who was France's top counter-terrorism investigator and still consults for security agencies, told Reuters that as he understands the case, Merah's engagement with militants in Afghanistan prompted French authorities to deem him potentially dangerous upon his return.

Back in France, however, he did not conspicuously hang out with people suspected of planning violence. This made it legally difficult for French authorities to detain him, Bruguiere said.

The French government has said there is no evidence Merah was formally a member of any radical Islamist group.

After events such as the September 11, 2001 al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington and the July 7, 2005 attacks on London's transport system, U.S. and allied spy agencies allocated significant new resources to monitoring the activities of young men, often from Middle Eastern or South Asian backgrounds, who travel from the West to Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Some U.S. officials said one of the reasons Merah was on the no-fly list was that the rules for putting names on that list were relaxed following the latest in a series of intelligence and legal glitches related to counter-terrorism that date back to before the September 11 attacks.

Investigations by Congress and an official inquiry known as the 9/11 Commission, revealed that the CIA had tracked two future September 11 hijackers to a meeting with suspected militants in Malaysia in January 2000. After that, the two suspects traveled to the United States and lived for months in San Diego. But due to fumbling and misjudgments involving the CIA and FBI, U.S. agencies only launched a manhunt for the men a few days before the attacks, at which point it was too late.

After post-attack inquiries, the United States instituted aggressive new programs to collect intelligence and created a new National Intelligence Director's office and, under its auspices, a National Counterterrorism Center to improve analysis and foster more information-sharing among competing agencies.

Efforts by the United States and its allies to dismantle al Qaeda's central command and kill its leaders over the years became more effective, culminating in the U.S. commando raid in May 2011 in which Osama bin Laden was killed.

But as intelligence agencies moved towards greater centralization and coordination, militants took the opposite tack, creating al Qaeda affiliates and "franchises" in venues such as North and East Africa and Yemen.

Later, leaders of the decentralized militant networks, such as U.S.-born, English-speaking preacher Anwar al Awlaki, encouraged followers to radicalize themselves and embark on whatever violent militant gestures were within their capabilities. According to the new al Qaeda ethos, even failures could be deemed successes if they produced publicity.

Awlaki was killed in a U.S. drone strike in September 2011.

PROLIFERATION OF MILITANT FACTIONS

The proliferation of militant factions, and the atomization of al Qaeda's central command, created new challenges for Western security agencies which made their jobs more difficult.

In Britain, for example, an intelligence collection operation called "Operation Crevice" which began in 2003 targeted a group of British suspects with links to militants in Pakistan. Over time, this produced a database of more than 4,000 telephone contacts involving dozens of individuals with whom the principal intelligence targets had been in contact.

On July 7, 2005, two of the people who had been in contact with some of those principal targets were part of a four-man cell of suicide bombers who attacked London's subway and bus system, killing 52.

However, British authorities, including the principal domestic spy agency MI-5, did not realize they had intelligence in hand on the two suspects until after the attack as they had never called enough attention to themselves before for British intelligence to deem them high-priority surveillance targets.

The case of the failed Christmas Day 2009 bombing of a U.S.-bound aircraft also demonstrated that, in the face of a fragmented militant movement, intelligence improvements instituted by U.S. agencies were not foolproof.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian-born militant who allegedly became radicalized by al Qaeda operatives while studying Arabic in Yemen, managed to board a Detroit-bound airliner with a bomb hidden in his underpants, even though U.S. intelligence agencies had collected direct and indirect clues that he might pose a threat.

His father, a wealthy businessman, warned the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria before the attempted attack that his son was involved with Islamic extremists in Yemen. Other fragmentary intelligence reporting, including telephone intercepts, suggested that Awlaki, or people close to him, were discussing using a Nigerian in a possible attack plot.

NEEDLE IN A BARN FULL OF HAYSTACKS

But at the time, intelligence officials said, U.S. and allied agencies were trying to trace and sort through "tens of thousands" of email account holders who had been in contact with Awlaki in Yemen, the spy equivalent of looking for a needle in a barn full of haystacks.

Ultimately, the scraps of intelligence U.S. agencies had on Abdulmutallab and his plot were not assembled until after he failed to ignite his bomb as his flight began its descent in U.S. airspace. He was subdued by passengers, convicted, and jailed for life earlier this year.

While their literary exponents and political opponents portray spy agencies as both omnipotent and omniscient, current and former counterterrorism officials say the case of Mohamed Merah is just the latest chapter in what is likely to be a continuing run of intelligence misses and near-misses.

Merah's actions, said Bruce Riedel, a former senior CIA analyst who has advised President Barack Obama on counterterrorism policy, are "straight out of the new al Qaeda strategy of smaller attacks using Western citizens who get training and indoctrination in Pakistan and then go kill the targets of the global jihad ? Crusaders and Zionists.

"These attacks," he said, "are extremely difficult to preempt because the plot is so small you can't get inside of it."

PFT: Parcells, Payton play coy after round of golf

Two years ago, I loudly supported the idea that sudden-death overtime places too much emphasis on the coin flip.

And so the adjustment of the postseason overtime rule was a welcome change, even though I still think that, in a playoff game, the team that kicks off should have a chance to match a touchdown scored by the team that has the first possession.

That said, I?m not sure that the elimination of sudden death is the best way to deal with overtime in a regular-season game.

It will make the regular-season games longer, by extending any game in which the team that receives the opening kickoff scores a field goal on the first drive.? Longer games aren?t necessarily an issue in the postseason, since the gap between the starting times is a full 3.5 hours.? In the regular season, it means that some early games will stretch too far into the 4:15 p.m. ET contests and, even worse, that some late-afternoon games will infringe on too much of NBC?s Football Night in America.

Also, longer regular-season games result in more opportunities for player injuries.

Also, there will be more ties, which can wreak havoc on the standings and the playoff possibilities.

Then there?s the fact that last season?s adjustment in the kickoff point, from the 30 to the 35, makes it less likely that the team that wins the coin toss will return the kick to the 40, string together a couple first downs, and win the game on a 50-yard field goal.

So, while I still support the current rules in the postseason, I?m not so sure I like applying the rule to the regular season.

For more analysis of that rule change and the other rules that were, or weren?t changed, he?s the opening segment of Wednesday?s PFT Live.
