Mississippi River barge traffic restored after lock repair

(Reuters) - Commercial shipping traffic on the Mississippi River north of St. Louis was restored late on Tuesday when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed emergency repairs to a lock gate damaged by a boat earlier in the day.

Army Corps spokesman Mike Petersen said on Wednesday that 15 barge tows containing 85 barges were waiting to pass through the lock at 9:30 a.m. CST (10.30 a.m. ET). He said a queue of 19 tows containing 142 barges had formed before the lock reopened at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The accident at Lock 27 near Granite City, Illinois, the system's busiest lock, occurred early on Tuesday in the auxiliary chamber. It is the only operational lock as the larger main chamber is closed for scheduled repairs until March.

Although vessel traffic on what is known as the mid-Mississippi River was seasonally slow, the lock closure was the latest logistics headache for shippers that rely on the inland waterways system to haul billions of dollars of grain, coal, fertilizer and other commodities.

Low water along a busy stretch between St. Louis and Cairo, Illinois, has been threatening to disrupt traffic on the drought-drained river since December.

Dredging operations have slowed traffic at various points of the river for months.

A six-mile stretch at Thebes, Illinois, has been closed for 16 hours a day since December as the Army Corps works to remove river-bottom rock pinnacles that pose a threat to boats during low water conditions.

Numark refreshes iDJ Live, NS7, Mixtrack Pro DJ controllers, intros new Orbit wireless option

DNP Numark refreshes iDJ Live, NS7, Mixtrack Pro DJ controllers, intros new Orbit wireless option

Many a DJ's first footsteps into the craft has started with a box labeled 'Numark.' At This year's Winter NAMM the prolific firm has updated three of it's existing controllers, and added a new hand-held wireless line -- called Orbit -- into (ahem) the mix. First up for the refresh treatment is the sequel to the iDJ Live iPad DJ controller -- the iDJ Live II (of course). What's new? Well this time around there's USB connectivity, which opens the functionality to a much broader range of software. The design has also been revised, with the platters most notably being much lower profile. Controls-wise, it's still back to basics with the essentials covered (EQ, crossfader etc), but the lack of onboard audio interface means you're still relying on an audio splitter for cueing. If you need a little more control, or a dedicated audio interface, the second revision on the list -- the Mixtrack Pro II -- might be more up your street. Head past the break to read more.

Once again the design has been given a makeover, plus there's 16 drum pads, hot cues, back-lit platters and all the usual effects -- there's also Serato DJ Intro software bundled in to get you going. The Mixtrack Pro II will cost $299 when it launches sometime this month. Last of the existing hardware revisions goes to Numark's popular motorized-platter controller the NS7, with the NS7 II. This is aimed at those DJs who like to trick their sets out a little bit, and this is made all the easier by the inclusion of 16 MPC-style pads, borrowed from the sister brand Akai's famous sample player line. The pads also have MIDI-assignable RGB backlights, letting you get creative with the color-scheme. The 3,600 'tick' resolution, plus slipmats definitely make this the digital-turntablist's choice (if that's a thing) from the new recruits.

Last, and possibly most interestingly, is the entirely new Orbit controller. This -- so claims Numark -- is the world's first wireless handheld DJ controller. The game-controller-esque design evidently hopes to bridge the gap between DJing and performance. The low-latency 2.5GHz wireless will bring the artist closer to the audience, for sure, but if you're a little more traditional, or like a longer, power heavy performance, you can still cable-up. There's four selectable banks of 16 pads (eight either side) plus four virtual knobs and a control wheel for adjusting parameters in real time. If that's all a little vanilla, there's also a two-axis accelerometer which can be set to control two different parameters (fader frequency or volume, for example) which is activated by shoulder buttons -- ideal for those extra-active performers -- and reminiscent of controllers we've seen before. For more info head over to the PRs, or check our ongoing NAMM coverage for hands-ons as we find things.

'Quadruple helix' DNA discovered in human cells

Jan. 20, 2013 ? In 1953, Cambridge researchers Watson and Crick published a paper describing the interweaving 'double helix' DNA structure -- the chemical code for all life.

Now, in the year of that scientific landmark's 60th Anniversary, Cambridge researchers have published a paper proving that four-stranded 'quadruple helix' DNA structures -- known as G-quadruplexes -- also exist within the human genome. They form in regions of DNA that are rich in the building block guanine, usually abbreviated to 'G'.

The findings mark the culmination of over 10 years investigation by scientists to show these complex structures in vivo -- in living human cells -- working from the hypothetical, through computational modelling to synthetic lab experiments and finally the identification in human cancer cells using fluorescent biomarkers.

The research, published January 20 in Nature Chemistry and funded by Cancer Research UK, goes on to show clear links between concentrations of four-stranded quadruplexes and the process of DNA replication, which is pivotal to cell division and production.

By targeting quadruplexes with synthetic molecules that trap and contain these DNA structures -- preventing cells from replicating their DNA and consequently blocking cell division -- scientists believe it may be possible to halt the runaway cell proliferation at the root of cancer.

"We are seeing links between trapping the quadruplexes with molecules and the ability to stop cells dividing, which is hugely exciting," said Professor Shankar Balasubramanian from the University of Cambridge's Department of Chemistry and Cambridge Research Institute, whose group produced the research.

"The research indicates that quadruplexes are more likely to occur in genes of cells that are rapidly dividing, such as cancer cells. For us, it strongly supports a new paradigm to be investigated -- using these four-stranded structures as targets for personalised treatments in the future."

Physical studies over the last couple of decades had shown that quadruplex DNA can form in vitro -- in the 'test tube', but the structure was considered to be a curiosity rather than a feature found in nature. The researchers now know for the first time that they actually form in the DNA of human cells.

"This research further highlights the potential for exploiting these unusual DNA structures to beat cancer -- the next part of this pipeline is to figure out how to target them in tumour cells," said Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK.

"It's been sixty years since its structure was solved but work like this shows us that the story of DNA continues to twist and turn."

The study published January 20 was led by Giulia Biffi, a researcher in Balasubramaninan's lab at the Cambridge Research Institute.

By building on previous research, Biffi was able to generate antibody proteins that detect and bind to areas in a human genome rich in quadruplex-structured DNA, proving their existence in living human cells.

Using fluorescence to mark the antibodies, the researchers could then identify 'hot spots' for the occurrence of four-stranded DNA -- both where in the genome and, critically, at what stage of cell division.

While quadruplex DNA is found fairly consistently throughout the genome of human cells and their division cycles, a marked increase was shown when the fluorescent staining grew more intense during the 's-phase' -- the point in a cell cycle where DNA replicates before the cell divides.

Cancers are usually driven by genes called oncogenes that have mutated to increase DNA replication -- causing cell proliferation to spiral out of control, and leading to tumour growth.

The increased DNA replication rate in oncogenes leads to an intensity in the quadruplex structures. This means that potentially damaging cellular activity can be targeted with synthetic molecules or other forms of treatments.

"We have found that by trapping the quadruplex DNA with synthetic molecules we can sequester and stabilise them, providing important insights into how we might grind cell division to a halt," said Balasubramanian.

"There is a lot we don't know yet. One thought is that these quadruplex structures might be a bit of a nuisance during DNA replication -- like knots or tangles that form.

"Did they evolve for a function? It's a philosophical question as to whether they are there by design or not -- but they exist and nature has to deal with them. Maybe by targeting them we are contributing to the disruption they cause."

The study showed that if an inhibitor is used to block DNA replication, quadruplex levels go down -- proving the idea that DNA is dynamic, with structures constantly being formed and unformed.

The researchers also previously found that an overactive gene with higher levels of Quadruplex DNA is more vulnerable to external interference.

"The data supports the idea that certain cancer genes can be usefully interfered with by small molecules designed to bind specific DNA sequences," said Balasubramanian.

"Many current cancer treatments attack DNA, but it's not clear what the rules are. We don't even know where in the genome some of them react -- it can be a scattergun approach.

"The possibility that particular cancer cells harbouring genes with these motifs can now be targeted, and appear to be more vulnerable to interference than normal cells, is a thrilling prospect.

"The 'quadruple helix' DNA structure may well be the key to new ways of selectively inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells. The confirmation of its existence in human cells is a real landmark."

How To Customize YouTube Embed | Business 2 Community

When companies new to the Internet start to look into using video marketing techniques, most How To Customize YouTube Embed image customized youtube embedquickly discover the bebefits that follow when they embed the latest youtube video in their site. It?s common for them to worry that it?s a difficult or cumbersome process. After all, ten years ago, it really was.

The good news for anyone looking into customized YouTube embedding options is that the process is extremely simple today. There are plenty of software packages online that allow you to quickly and easily customize and embed YouTube videos with numerous additions that can help your online business succeed.

There are plenty of ways to customize your YouTube embedded videos to fit your own marketing strategies. Embedding them is the easy part. Finding how to make your videos work best is where it gets tricky.

How To Get The Most From Your Customized YouTube Embedded Videos

I.? Be Judicious With Your Branding

There?s an open question in the internet video marketing world over just how prominent a logo and branding should be in custom YouTube videos. If you?re too overt about, you can risk driving away people who feel like you?re hammering them over the head. If you?re too subtle, well, we?ve all heard the horror stories about ads so funny no one ever remembered the brand afterwards.

In general, the best option is to find ways to introduce the brand organically within the video, like if it?s a story in which your brand plays a part. Yes, this basically means you?re doing product placement in your own videos. I know it sounds a little silly, but that?s the best compromise at this point. Internet users really don?t care for pushy branding.

II. Begin And End With a Bang

You can?t exactly build up to a big crescendo when you?re dealing with custom embedded YouTube videos. You only have a matter of seconds to grab the attention of your viewers, so you need to start with something big, flashy, or loud. It needs to immediately be interesting or relevant to them.

If possible, your overall message should be expressed early on as well. A lot of people, unfortunately, aren?t going to sit through your video, so you want to make sure they still get the takeaway.

III. Vary Up Your Content

Just having someone talk into the camera for a couple minutes is functional, but pretty bare-bones. For a better presentation that holds people?s attention (do you sense a running theme here?) try introducing various ?multimedia? elements. Use charts and graphs when appropriate to back up ideas. Utilize YouTube?s embedded popup comment system to add commentary or jokes. You might even experiment with bits of animation or other flashier techniques.

It?s a basic strategy in the world of teaching: if you want to convey an idea, convey it in several different ways. Apply this principle to your YouTube videos when customizing them, and you?ll have a better chance of keeping people around and ensuring they get your point.

IV. Keep Visitors Clicking

Another good option for keeping interest in your customized YouTube embedded videos is to introduce interactive apps that keep them engaged. Companies have had great success embedding sales links directly into their videos, for example, or adding buttons to facilitate social media sharing or to sign up for a mailing list.

Internet users get twitchy clicking fingers. If they?re clicking on your video, they aren?t clicking on someone else?s site instead.

The Key Point: Keep Your Users Interested

To customize your YouTube embedded videos for best effect, focus on the user and keeping their attention on your website. Use your branding sparingly so you don?t send them packing, and throw new ideas and activities at them to keep them thinking about your message.

Small business chat update ? Bob Fowke ? LibroEditing ...

mugs Ooh, look ? it?s only another Small Business Chat update, this time with Bob Fowke of YouCaxton! His original interview was published on 14 Jan 2012 and when asked where he planned to be in a year?s time, he answered, ?I hope that we will be starting to become an established, reputable name. I?m much more concerned with quality than quantity, although we have no intention of turning business away?. Sounds good to me! So, where is Bob now ??

Are you where you thought you?d be when you looked forward a year ago?

It?s hard enough to imagine the future but even harder to remember how you imagined it a year later, but I think we?re roughly where we thought we might be, in fact we?ve done rather better than expected.

What has changed and what has stayed the same?

We?ve become larger and employ more people/freelances, so that has changed, also we have a shop/office which allows us more access to the world ? and allows the world more access to us ? but we?re still very much a small specialist company trying to act for the benefit of very individual writers. We have to keep that personal touch, that?s our constant.

What have you learned? What do you wish you?d known a year ago?

The learning has been absolutely fascinating. I respected our writers before and my respect has increased. On a more practical note, experience has confirmed what we previously suspected ? that the large self-publishing companies can be very uncaring of writers, if not downright exploitative. We (and other similar small highly skilled companies) are more necessary than we thought we were.

I wish I?d known more about social media because that?s something we have to be able to help with. We?re now got someone to advise our writers ? thank goodness, because I?m too much of a dinosaur.

Any more hints and tips for people?

The rules are the same now as ever ? whether publishing or self publishing ? make sure the book is as good as you can possibly make it before you publish and, assuming readership is important to you, have a very clear idea of the potential readership.

And enjoy the process, writing is fascinating in its own right and it?s easy to let the complications of self-publishing get in the way of one?s initial passion.

And ? where do you see yourself and your business in a(nother) year?s time.

Steady growth, keeping standards high and retaining respect for our customers.

Again, sounds good to me. I?m glad to see the company is doing well and that they?re remaining flexible enough to embrace newer concepts like social media. This brings up another important point, too: if you?re not an expert in something. bring in the experts to help! Best wishes to Bob for a successful 2013.

The YouCaxton website is at http://www.youcaxton.co.uk/ and you can find all the requisite contact details there.

Note: I should say that I am set up to receive a referral fee upon referral of a writer who ends up being published by YouCaxton. This is not the reason I am publishing this interview.

If you?ve enjoyed this interview, please see more freelancer chat, the index to all the interviewees, and information on how you can have your business featured.

Famous bridge in India is in danger of coming down ... because of spit

Engineers say that Kolkata?s landmark Howrah bridge is in danger because gutkha chewing tobacco spit is corroding its pillars. Now activists are trying to ban the acidic tobacco.

By Shaikh Azizur Rahman,?Contributor / January 20, 2013

Indians bathe on the banks of the River Ganges River beside the landmark, Howrah Bridge on a cold winter morning in Kolkata, India, last week.

It was first reported in 2010 that the pillars of Kolkata?s landmark Howrah bridge were being used as spittoons by pedestrians who chewed gutkha?? a tobacco product popular with millions in India.

Engineers who surveyed the cantilever structure then reported that the struts supporting the girders of the bridge had already lost half of their metal casing: The corrosion was apparently caused by acids in the gutkha.

Soon the Lions Club of Howrah launched a ?Save Howrah Bridge from Spit? campaign urging people not to spit on the bridge. ?

The campaign spread across the city of Kolkata, where reddish-brown gutkha stains are visible almost everywhere ? pavements, streets, office staircases, business houses, and residential complexes. Prominent citizens of Kolkata joined the campaign in an effort to rid the city of the ugly stains.

Gutkha is a commercially produced pre-packaged mixture of crushed betel nut, tobacco, lime, paraffin, and other ?secret? ingredients, many of which are carcinogenic and addictive.

Some brands of gutkha also contain lead, arsenic, chromium, nickel, and cadmium, which are as bad as nicotine. To make its shelf life longer, magnesium carbonate ? which is used in fire extinguishers and is a known carcinogen ? is also added to gutkha.

Activists reported about a year ago that one-third of men and one-fifth of women across India are addicted to chewing tobacco and gutkha was its most popular form.

Because of its candy-like flavor and dirt-cheap prices ? 4 to 6 cents per sachet ? gutkha has become increasingly popular among children, who chew and even eat it. An estimated 5 million of India?s children are addicted to gutkha, and every day another 5,000 try it for the first time, according to reports last year by the American Cancer Society.

Research indicates that tobacco kills 1 million Indians annually and that gutkha alone leads to 80,000 cases of oral cancer every year ? the highest incidence in the world. In recent years an anti-gutkha campaign has picked up steam across the country with several nongovernment organizations lobbying for a ban on gutkha.

In August 2011, India?s Food Safety and Standard Authority issued a regulation declaring that no foodstuff, including gutkha, could contain tobacco. Last year some states began following the order by banning gutkha.

With Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states having banned it earlier this month, the manufacture and sale of the product has now been prohibited in 17 of India?s 28 states and 3 of the 7 union territories (UTs), including New Delhi. However, reports in many local newspapers suggest that gutkha?is being smuggled from other regions and is still being sold in many states.

Kolkata-based anti-gutkha campaigner Sekharesh Ghoshal said that states and union territories should cooperate and ban the tobacco in the national interest.

?Sachets of gutkha display a warning that it?s dangerous for health. Yet gutkha users do not pay any attention to such health risks and keep on chewing it,? says Dr. Ghoshal.

?Unless gutkha is banned and actually made unavailable in the market, you cannot stop people from using it. A ban only in parts of the country is of no help.?

But in many states the gutkha companies are fighting the ban by taking the local government to court.

They argue that gutkha is a tobacco product that cannot be classified as a foodstuff, and therefore cannot be banned. Still, courts in most states have upheld the ban.

Bela Naskar, the mother of two child addicts in a slum in Kolkata, says she vehemently supports a ban on gutkha.

?My 10- and 13-year-old sons have been into gutkha for some years. They take several sachets of it every day. It?s bad for their health. But they don?t listen to my warnings.?

?We really need a ban on gutkha in our state,? Ms. Naskar says. ?Otherwise I shall not be able to rid my children from this dangerous addiction.??

Graphic shows AP-GfK poll opinions on gun control policies

This frame grab image shows a scene from video released by the National Rifle Association. In a sharp pushback against any new gun regulations, the NRA posted a Web video on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, that labels President Barack Obama an "elitist hypocrite" for allowing his daughters to be protected by armed Secret Service agents while not embracing armed guards for schools. "Are the president's kids more important than yours?" a male narrator asks in the video. "Then why is he skeptical of putting armed security in schools, when his kids are protected by armed guards in their school?" (AP Photo/NRA)

(AP) ? Conceding "this will be difficult," President Barack Obama urged a reluctant Congress on Wednesday to require background checks for all gun sales and ban both military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines in an emotion-laden plea to curb gun violence in America.

The president's sweeping, $500 million plan, coming one month after the school massacre in Connecticut, marks the most comprehensive effort to tighten gun laws in nearly two decades. But his proposals, most of which are opposed by the National Rifle Association, face a doubtful future in a divided Congress where Republicans control the House.

Seeking to circumvent at least some opposition, Obama signed 23 executive actions on Wednesday, including orders to make more federal data available for background checks and end a freeze on government research on gun violence. But he acknowledged that the steps he took on his own would have less impact than the broad measures requiring approval from Capitol Hill.

"To make a real and lasting difference, Congress, too, must act," Obama said, speaking at a White House ceremony with school children and their parents. "And Congress must act soon."

The president's announcements capped a swift and wide-ranging effort, led by Vice President Joe Biden, to respond to the deaths of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. But Obama's gun control proposals set him up for a tough political fight with Congress as he starts his second term, when he'll need Republican support to meet three looming fiscal deadlines and pass comprehensive immigration reform.

"I will put everything I've got into this, and so will Joe," the president said. "But I tell you, the only way we can change is if the American people demand it."

Key congressional leaders were tepid in their response to the White House proposals.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner's office signaled no urgency to act, with spokesman Michael Steel saying only that "House committees of jurisdiction will review these recommendations. And if the Senate passes a bill, we will also take a look at that."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he was committed to ensuring that the Senate will consider gun violence legislation "early this year." But he did not endorse any of Obama's specific proposals.

The president vowed to use "whatever weight this office holds" to fight for his recommendations. He's likely to travel around the country in the coming weeks to rally public support and could engage his still-active presidential campaign operation in the effort. But he'll have to overcome a well-financed counter-effort by the NRA.

"This will be difficult," Obama acknowledged. "There will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical, all-out assault on liberty ? not because that's true, but because they want to gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves."

The president, speaking in front of an audience that included families of some of those killed in Newtown, said 900 Americans had lost their lives to gun violence in the four weeks since the school shootings.

"We can't put this off any longer," Obama declared. "Every day we wait, the number will keep growing."

Many Democrats say an assault weapons ban faces the toughest road in Congress. Obama wants lawmakers to reinstate the expired 1994 ban on the high-grade weapons, and strengthen the measure to prevent manufacturers from circumventing the prohibition by making cosmetic changes to banned guns.

The president is also likely to face opposition to his call for Congress to limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds.

But Democrats are hopeful they can build consensus around the president's call for universal background checks. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says 40 percent of gun sales are conducted with no criminal background checks, such as in some instances at gun shows or by private sellers over the Internet or through classified ads.

The NRA is opposed to all three measures. In a statement Wednesday, the gun lobby said, "Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected" by Obama's efforts and the nation's children "will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy."

And on the eve of Obama's announcement, the NRA released an online video accusing him of being an "elitist hypocrite" for sending his daughters to school with armed guards while opposing having guards with guns at all U.S. schools.

White House spokesman Jay Carney called the video "repugnant and cowardly."

The president's proposals did include a $150 million request to Congress that would allow schools to hire 1,000 new police officers, counselors and psychologists. The White House plan also includes legislative and executive action to increase mental health services, including boosting funding for training aimed at getting young people into treatment more quickly.

A lopsided 84 percent of Americans back broader background checks, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. Nearly six in 10 Americans want stricter gun laws, the same poll showed, with majorities favoring a nationwide ban on military-style weapons and limits on gun violence depicted in video games, movies and TV shows.

The NRA and pro-gun lawmakers have long suggested that violent images in video games and entertainment are more to blame for mass shootings than the availability of guns. But Obama's proposals do little to address that concern, other than calling on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research links between violent images and gun attacks.

Government scientists have been prohibited from researching the causes and prevention of gun violence since 1996, when a budget amendment was passed that barred researchers from spending taxpayer money on such studies.

The administration is calling on Congress to provide $10 million for expanded research.

Obama also wants lawmakers to ban armor-piercing ammunition, except for use by the military and law enforcement. And he's asking them to create stiffer penalties for gun trafficking, to provide $14 million to help train police officers and others to respond to shootings, and to approve his nominee to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

One of the president's executive actions on Wednesday was to nominate B. Todd Jones to head the ATF, which has been without a permanent director since 2006. Jones has served as the bureau's acting director since 2011.

Other steps Obama took through his presidential powers include:

? Ordering tougher penalties for people who lie on background checks.

? Requiring federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

? Ordering a review of safety standards for gun locks and gun safes.

Big Blue View :: 2013 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Damontre Moore, defensive end, Texas A&M

Big Blue View continues its 2013 NFL Draft Prospect Profile series with a look at another Texas A&M player.

Our second 2013 NFL Draft prospect profile will look at defensive end Damontre Moore, another Texas A&M Aggie who is a top five player on my big board. Right now, Moore projects as a top five pick and is unlikely to be available for the New York Giants, but if there is anything I've learned from running a draft site is never say never especially this early in the process.

[Complete SB Nation Draft Coverage]

The book on Moore
Pros

Moore is an insanely productive player for the Aggies who followed up a very good 2011 (72 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and 8.5 sacks) with a terrific 2012 (85 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks). Moore has a non-stop motor and constantly makes tackles down the field. Moore is a lanky defender who could add some weight to his frame to play defensive end in a 43 (right now he's listed at 6-foot-4, 250 pounds). Moore has played both outside linebacker and defensive end for the Aggies. Moore plays with good flexibility and leverage when he's pass rushing.

[Big Blue View 2013 NFL Draft Big Board]

Cons

He's a very good, but not great athlete, Ezekial Ansah of BYU is a better athlete than Moore, as is Barkevious Mingo of LSU. He does not explode off the snap consistently and will have to continue to improve his pass rushing moves. To play defensive end will need to get stronger.

Compared to: John Abraham (CBS Sports)

For me I think if you're taking him in the top 10 you're hoping he is Aldon Smith, similar, size length and active hands. The combine will give us an indication if he has the same speed. I'm not sure he's quite the same athlete, he does not come with the same injury concern Smith had (broken leg) and has been consistently more productive.

[Follow Big Blue View on Twitter | 'Like' Big Blue View on Facebook.]

Does He Fit With The Giants?

I imagine Moore will measure with the kind of length that is a requisite to play defensive end for the Giants, but he will need to add size to play defensive end consistently. He's also likely to be selected before the Giants pick, but could be available depending on how the next few months go.

Video Highlight

Make sure to follow @jmpasq on twitter. He uploads many of the prospect videos you see online (I'd almost say the majority of them) and he's a Giants' fan to boot.

Big Board Rankings (as of Jan. 11th, 2012)

CBS Sports - 4th

National Football Post - 50th (no explanation -- will add when that scouting report becomes available)

Mocking The Draft - 5th

Final Thoughts

Right now Moore looks like a top 10 pick. The thing Moore will have to show teams is that he either has enough athleticism to stand up as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL and be able to drop into coverage when it's required, or that he can add some more strength to his frame to play down in at 4-3 right defensive end consistently. I'm also personally interested to see how strong he is on his bench. Moore's stock is high right now and as long as he show's he is a very good, but not elite athlete should be a lock for the first round.

Nail the "Why Should I Hire You?" Question in Interviews by Listing Your Potential Contributions

Nail the "Why Should I Hire You?" Question in Interviews by Listing Your Potential ContributionsThe "Why should I hire you?" question in job interviews is one of the hardest to nail because it's typically your last chance to showcase what makes you a good candidate. If you want to get it right, Forbes recommends you list off everything you'd do to contribute to the company.

Instead of listing your past accomplishments that might suggest you're a good fit at a company, Forbes suggests that you focus on what you'd do at the company that would make it a better place:

[T]ell them how you are going to contribute to that department and that company," [Andy] Teach says. "Let the interviewer know that one of your goals is to make their job easier by taking on as much responsibility as possible and that you will be excited about this job starting on day one."

If you're not sure exactly what types of contributions to include, Forbes also suggests you take a look at the job description, pick a few important details, and concentrate on how you'd make improvements.

President Obama should ask himself, 'What would Lincoln do?'

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

In December, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney stated, ?This administration does not believe the 14th Amendment gives the president the power to ignore the debt ceiling ? period.?? White House Dismisses Constitutional Challenge In Debt Ceiling Saga:

That challenge led [Cornell law professor Michael Dorf] and George Washington University professor Neil Buchanan to a rather unusual conclusion, in a new article they published in the Columbia Law Review: Given a choice between only unconstitutional options, the president should choose the "least unconstitutional" option. [See, How to Choose The Least Unconstitutional Option: Lessons For The President (And Others) From the Debt Ceiling Standoff - Columbia Law Review (.pdf).]

Which, Dorf says, means the White House could raise the debt limit on its own and issue Treasury bonds to raise money.

That solution, beyond being against the law, has another problem. The markets don't like uncertainty. And anyone who wants to buy those bonds might demand huge interest payments to compensate for the legal risk involved.

There's one more complication, courtesy of Steve Bradbury, a Washington lawyer who formerly headed up the Office of Legal Counsel at the Justice Department for President George W. Bush. Bradbury says the Antideficiency Act makes it clear the White House can't obligate the U.S. government to pay money without an appropriation from Congress or other direction, in the form of a law.

"Executive officers who spend money when it's not authorized or incur debt that hasn't been authorized by statute are actually violating federal law," Bradbury says. "And in fact, although there have not been prosecutions under that statute, it is a criminal statute," exposing government officials to inspector general and General Accounting Office investigations, if nothing else.

The White House referred the $1 trillion-dollar platinum coin option, widely discussed by legal scholars and economists in recent weeks, to the U.S. Treasury Department for an opinion. "The Treasury Department has responded that it will not mint a trillion-dollar platinum coin to get around the debt ceiling. If they did, the Federal Reserve would not accept it." Treasury: We won?t mint a platinum coin to sidestep the debt ceiling:

That?s the bottom line of the statement that Anthony Coley, a spokesman for the Treasury Department, gave me today. ?Neither the Treasury Department nor the Federal Reserve believes that the law can or should be used to facilitate the production of platinum coins for the purpose of avoiding an increase in the debt limit,? he said.

The inclusion of the Federal Reserve is significant. For the platinum coin idea to work, the Federal Reserve would have to treat it as a legal way for the Treasury Department to create currency. If they don?t believe it?s legal and would not credit the Treasury Department?s deposit, the platinum coin would be worthless.

* * *

As White House Press Secretary Jay Carney put it, ?there are only two options to deal with the debt limit: Congress can pay its bills or they can fail to act and put the nation into default.?

Wrong, Mr. Carney. The abdication by Congress of its responsibility to govern does not relieve the President of his responsibility to govern and to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution."

This was the choice faced by President Abraham Lincoln the last time insurrectionists threatened to destroy our Union. Professors Dorf and Buchanan addressed this in their Columbia Law Review article -- President Lincoln?s famous ?all the laws, but one? speech:

The relevant discussion appears in President Abraham Lincoln?s address to a special session of Congress in July 1861. In late April, President Lincoln had ordered the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus suspended between Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. When that order was carried out, Chief Justice Taney declared the presidential suspension unconstitutional, but the writ he issued was ignored. Speaking to Congress a little over a month later, President Lincoln argued that his suspension order was constitutional, but before coming to that point he claimed that even if Congress alone had the power to suspend the privilege of the writ, an unconstitutional presidential suspension was nonetheless justified as the least unconstitutional option available. He asked rhetorically, ?are all the laws, but one, to go unexecuted, and the government itself go to pieces, lest that one be violated??

It is clear from the context that the one ?law? that warranted violation in President Lincoln?s hypothetical example was a constitutional provision: the Suspension Clause. But Lincoln implied that failure to violate the Suspension Clause would be a greater violation of the Constitution, as it would betray the Presidential Oath, which requires the president to ?preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.?

President Obama is faced with Abraham Lincoln's choice. Tea-Publican economic terrorists have taken the country hostage and threaten to destroy the Union by reducing our government to a banana republic under the control of wealthy elite plutocrats. They are doing so in service to their lord and master, the Tax Fairy, Grover Norquist, who decreed: "I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub."

Make no mistake, these economic terrorists are anti-government insurrectionists at war with the United States government. And President Obama has a constitutional duty to do whatever is necessary to preserve the Union and to put down this insurrection against the United States government.

On Friday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his leadership team sent President Obama a letter urging him to ?to take any lawful steps to ensure that America does not break its promises and trigger a global crisis ? without congressional approval, if necessary.?

President Obama should ask himself, "What would Lincoln do?" The answer is clear, Mr. President.

Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer, defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough have much in common

Syracuse, NY ? When Scott Shafer and Chuck Bullough met at Western Michigan in 2005, the connection was immediate.

?We clicked right away. In a matter of five minutes after I met him at Western Michigan he was like, ?I?m hiring you,? ? Bullough said. ?Ever since then, we?ve always said that whoever gets the first opportunity, we?re hiring each other.?

Shafer, who took over as head football coach at Syracuse University this week after Doug Marrone left to coach the Buffalo Bills, made good on that deal Friday when he hired Bullough to succeed him as defensive coordinator for the Orange.

?The biggest thing with me and Scott is that we have the same philosophy of football,? said Bullough, 44, who just completed his second year as a defensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns. ?Both of our dads were coaches. And when you are a coach?s son you grow up loving the game ? realizing it?s all about enthusiasm, attitude and intensity.?

Shafer, who is 46, said he hired the East Lansing, Mich., native because of their relationship, and the fact that they both love an attacking 4-3 defense that employs frequent blitzes.

?I?m in the business 22 years. There?s only a handful of people that you trust like a brother,? Shafer said during a news conference introducing him as the new SU head coach. ?He?s a hard-nosed guy. He?s been in the NFL as a player and coach.?

?That?s the great thing. His scheme is basically my scheme,? said Bullough, who spent five years at UCLA as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator before going to the Browns. ?At Western, we came in and kind of had the same ideas. It?s the same basic defense, with linebackers off the ball. We just think alike.?

Bullough was born in Michigan but finished his high school football career in Orchard Park. His father, longtime NFL defensive coordinator Hank Bullough, coached for two years with the Bills. The elder Bullough was head coach of the team for parts of the 1985 and 1986 seasons.

?When I was in high school at Orchard Park, I was down to two schools ? I was going to Syracuse or I was going to Michigan State,? said Bullough, an all-state linebacker. He ended up following in his father?s footsteps and playing for the Spartans.

Bullough was an All-Big Ten linebacker, and he went on to play three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. In his final collegiate season, he played against current SU linebackers coach Steve Morrison and running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley, who both starred at Michigan. Bullough also is familiar with SU defensive line coach Tim Daoust, who coached at Western Michigan from 2006-09.

If Daoust and Morrison stay in their respective roles, SU will have four coaches on the staff (with Shafer and Bullough) who were influenced by longtime Broncos coach Bill Cubit.

Prior to working under Shafer, who was the Broncos defensive coordinator, Bullough spent five years with the Chicago Bears in various assistant?s positions. Bullough also spent a year (2004) as a linebackers and special teams coach at Lake Forest College.

Bullough said he looks forward to returning to the college ranks.

?In the pros, it?s all about football. You sit there and study film 24 hours a day. You don?t have academic meetings. You don?t have recruiting,? he said. ?In college, you get the football but you also get to influence kids? lives.

?I?ve been both places. I think my coaching on both levels, and enjoying both, really helps,? he said.

Bullough plans to move to Syracuse soon with his wife, Nicole, and daughters Chloe and Annika.

Here?s an average?a pretty typical dining day for me on the road:

Breakfast:? Free hotel food or Starbucks (sometimes both)

Lunch: I typically dine with colleagues in the work place because my employer Publix Super Markets?provides a free meal at most of their support locations.

Dinner is when I let my hair down and go out, usually eating a $10-15 dinner at a local dining establishment, rather than?chain restaurant most of the time.

That?s how I roll ? and for the record, we have a daily suggested food allowance for business travel that is set in the mid-thirties range.

Not suprisingly, it?s how most?most cost conscious business travelors roll. According to?the New York Daily news,?Starbucks is the most popular dining spot?for employees traveling on business, according to a report from?travel and expense management company Certify.??In 2012, employees expensed nearly 21,000 transactions at the coffee shop retailer with the green and white logo, with bills averaging $7.54.

Good managers fake it

Jan. 10, 2013 ? Research published January 10 suggests that managers recognise the need to feign their emotions at work, especially when interacting with staff.

This is the key finding of a doctoral study conducted by psychologist Chiara Amati, from Edinburgh Napier University. She is presenting her work 10 January 2013, to the Annual Conference of the British Psychological Society Division of Occupational Psychology. The Conference is being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chester.

To date the management literature has been promoting the notion that good leaders and managers are authentic, open and honest. However, the present study paints a slightly different picture, at least as far as managers are concerned. To ensure employees perform well in their jobs, managers need to manufacture positive and encouraging emotions and override any unhelpful, private thoughts.

"Faking it seems, to a degree, to just be part of good people management," reported Chiara.

In her exploratory study, Chiara interviewed 12 managers and surveyed 30. The findings present an interesting observation of the ways in which managers get results.

Chiara commented: "Managers who spoke to me reported feeling obliged to monitor their public displays of emotions in order to manage staff performance and maintain good working relationships with their team. In many management roles, especially lower down the hierarchy or ranks of power, it is more important for managers to deploy influencing skills to get people to do things; they simply do not have the authority to command unconditional respect.

A further finding of the study suggests that female managers may need to contrive their emotional displays more than their male counterparts.

"Female mangers need to deal with contrasting workplace stereotypes; on the one hand they are expected to be warm and nurturing, not angry or aggressive; on the other, displays of emotion, such as crying, are often seen as openly manipulative," reported Chiara.

Anne, an interviewee recounted an incident when she had become angry in a meeting. Rather than taking on board what she was saying, the men in the meeting did not listen nor take what she said seriously. Anne was laughing when she remembered: "The message was 'Am I ok?', as if I was unwell or ill. This is a cultural thing, isn't it? A woman gets angry so you ask 'is she ok?'."

Chiara continues: "We have known for some time that the emotional climate in the workplace is a key factor in employee wellbeing and performance. We have also known about the need for managers to be emotional intelligent to be successful. What we have established here is just how important it is that managers 'perform' or put on a public emotional show, even if they don't feel like it.

Polaroid confirms iM1836 mirrorless with Android, adds three more cameras

Polaroid makes its Androidbased mirrorless camera official, adds two cameras and a camcorder to the mix

Polaroid left little doubt that it was launching its Android-based, interchangeable lens camera at CES, and sure enough, it's here: meet the iM1836. It mates an 18.1-megapixel, 1080p video-capable mirrorless body with Android (which we now know to be Android 4.1) to quickly share imagery with social networks over WiFi, or directly to other devices through Bluetooth. Its 3.5-inch display won't put the Galaxy Camera's 4.8-inch panel to shame, but Polaroid is no doubt counting on the ability to swap optics (which includes Micro Four Thirds lenses, through an optional adapter) and a pop-up flash to clinch a sale. The iM1836 should arrive in the first quarter at a $399 price, with a 10-30mm lens included -- uncommonly cheap for a camera that could potentially outshoot its Nikon and Samsung opponents.

That's not the only camera in the Polaroid brand's 2013 lineup, however. Non-Android parallels to the iM1836 are coming with both WiFi ( iM1232W, $349) and without (iM1030, $299) for cost-conscious photographers; those who don't mind a fixed-in-place lens can get the iS2433, a $199 bridge camera with a 24x (25-600mm equivalent) lens, a 16-megapixel backlit Sony CMOS sensor and a 3-inch LCD. One camcorder, the iD975, is joining the fray with 1080p video, 16-megapixel stills, a 3-inch touchscreen and a video-in-video mode that shows the person recording video along with the main footage. Polaroid hasn't provided launch dates for its more conventional shooters.
