Navy SEAL Foundation?says it will not accept donations generated by sales of a controversial book by a member of the SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden, The Virginian-Pilot reports.
The foundation, which supports Navy SEALs and their families,?was among the charities to which Mark Bissonnette has said he would give earnings from No Easy Day, which became an instant bestseller upon release Tuesday. In the book, Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen, offers a firsthand account of the raid on bin Laden?s Pakistan compound.
The Defense Department has threatened legal action over the book, which the Pentagon says includes sensitive information and breaches nondisclosure agreements.
The foundation suggested in an online statement Wednesday that accepting money arising from the book?s sales would go against its mission of ?providing immediate and ongoing support and assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community and their families.?
The group raised more than $6.5 million in 2010, according to tax filings, and reported a surge in contributions last year after the bin Laden mission.
