USF announced Thursday that the NCAA had denied their appeal for a hardship waiver that would have allowed Notre Dame transfer Aaron Lynch, one of the top defensive ends in the country out of high school, to play this season."The waiver was denied, which I think we were all prepared for," Bulls coach Skip Holtz said Thursday. "He certainly understands it. It gives him an opportunity to redshirt and jump on his academics. He's getting married this weekend. He's got an awful lot going on his life right now."
"We were all wishful that it would go through, but unfortunately it didn't," Holtz said. "We'll make do with what we have."
Holtz said he's prepared all camp as if Lynch wouldn't be available this season. The Bulls may have to rely on a pair of true freshman - Eric Lee and Daniel Perry - to add depth and production at a thin position. Ryne Giddins and Julius Forte return, and the Bulls also signed junior college transfer Tevin Mims, who's challenging for a starting spot.
Lynch, a Freshman All-American last fall with the Fighting Irish, has three years of eligibility starting in 2013.
"We've taken the approach as if he wasn't going to get it," Holtz said. "Eric Lee has gotten all those reps at the defensive end position. If (the waiver) would've went through, we would've started working (Lynch) into the mix. Eric and Daniel Perry have been getting most of the reps at defensive end."
Virgin to transfer
Wide receiver/tight end Isaac Virgin plans to transfer from USF, Holtz said Tuesday. Virgin played in ten games last season, but only had one catch, with most of his work on special teams.
"He's a great young man. I have a lot of respect for Isaac," Holtz said. "I wish him nothing but success."
Holtz said Virgin expressed interest in transferring to a Division 1-AA school where he would be eligible to play immediately.
