Lector at Papal WYD Mass says she encountered Church

This is a syndicated post from CNA Daily News. [Read the original article...]

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jul 28, 2013 / 06:42 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The young woman who proclaimed a Scripture reading at the Papal Mass at World Youth Day said that it was an unforgettable experience that enabled her to encounter the Church in a unique way.

?It was amazing to look out and see more than three million people, and to think that this is all due to 12 men who said ?yes? to God?s call 2,000 years ago,? said 19-year-old Katherine Bauman, a native of Denver, Colo.

Bauman, who is studying theology, education and classical languages at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., proclaimed the first reading at the World Youth Day Closing Mass with Pope Francis on Copacabana Beach.

The July 28 Mass, which was moved from its original location in western Rio de Janeiro due to heavy rains, drew an estimated 3.2 million people.

Looking out over a massive sea of pilgrims from around the world, Bauman was amazed.?

?It was an incredible experience,? she told CNA. ?It expanded my perception of the diversity and the richness of our Church?all the different cultures gathered together.??

?Having this experience in a Latin American country, with a Latin American Pope, returning here for the first time ? it?s so powerful,? she continued. ?It showed me that I?m part of something a lot bigger than just me.?

In early June, Bauman got a phone call inviting her to read at the Mass. She was completely shocked, and it took her a while to process the fact that she would be reading in front of several million people and Pope Francis.

As the event drew closer, she became ?a bit nervous? about speaking in front of so many people. But the nervousness was replaced with excitement when she got up on the altar.

?I was just so immersed in the moment,? she said, adding that ?it?s really not about me anyway.?

This is the first time Bauman has attended a World Youth Day, although she was just miles away from the 1993 festivities in Denver, where she was born. Just two weeks old at the time, she was not at the events then, but has wanted to attend a World Youth Day for years.

Two decades later, Bauman is finally attending the international youth gathering and will be celebrating her 20th birthday in Brazil, making the event even more memorable, though she does not have any special plans for her birthday.

?It?s a pilgrimage,? she explained, although she joked that ?I?m hoping to have ?Happy Birthday? sung to me in at least three different languages.?

Bauman came to Brazil with a U.S. group from the Christian Life Movement, an international ecclesial movement started in South America. They arrived a week early to do mission trips in the favelas ? or slums ? of Sao Paolo, an experience that she described as ?overwhelming.?

Her group painted the local outreach center, conducted catechesis with the children and visited families in their homes to talk with them, pray with them and listen to their stories.

These visits were ?startling,? Bauman said, explaining that she was ?struck by the openness of the people in this culture in general, but especially of the people in the favelas. They didn?t know us, but they invited us into their homes and they poured their hearts out to us.?

She contrasted this with the United States, where it is ?almost a social taboo? to really open up and touch someone?s heart upon first meeting them.
?
?But we are meant for true encounter with one another, which is what I experienced in the slums, and I believe that we can learn a lot in this area from other cultures,? she reflected.

Bauman has also worked with the poor in Denver for several years, through a program called Christ in the City that brings young people from around the country to serve the local homeless.

Commenting on Pope Francis, who also visited a favela during his trip to Brazil, she said that she is ?really touched by what he does, especially by the spontaneity of the love that he shows.?

?It?s clear that he sees the person first, and his primary goal in any encounter is to love the person without reservation.?

In addition to the Closing Mass with Pope Francis, the Opening Mass also made a powerful impression on Bauman.

?I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and I didn?t even notice the rain at times. Even though I didn?t understand the language and I was exhausted, I was just so caught up in what was going on,? she said.

Reflecting on World Youth Day overall, Bauman said that the huge numbers of people were what struck her most.

?Just seeing people pour onto the beach ? they kept coming and coming and coming. And then realizing that we?re all there for the same reason; it?s just really powerful,? she explained. ?What if we all lived out our faith? What could we accomplish? We could do a lot.?

DEAR ABBY July 28: Hunt begins for wedding gift ordered but never delivered

DEAR ABBY: My daughter was married recently and has been sending out her thank-you notes. When she checked her registry to determine if all her gifts had been accounted for, she saw that her stepbrother and his wife purchased a gift, but it was not mailed by the department store.

We're assuming that it was brought to the wedding, but it's nowhere to be found. How can we resolve this delicate situation? She wants to tell her sister-in-law, but she is concerned it might have been an oversight and be embarrassing. She plans to contact the wedding venue, but it has been three weeks and you'd think if something had been left behind that they would have contacted her. We are also going to check with the friends who packed up the cars. Any other ideas? ? STEVE IN FLORIDA

DEAR STEVE: Because your daughter knows a gift was purchased by her stepbrother and his wife, she should ask them how it was to be delivered because it might have been lost en route. Such things have been known to happen, which is why it is always wise to request that a merchant provide proof of delivery. That way the recipient signs for the package, and everyone is assured it didn't "fall off the truck."

I doubt the stepbrother and his wife, having gone to the expense of buying something, would have forgotten to give it to your daughter. I also doubt the couple who packed up the gifts would have overlooked one. As to the venue where the wedding was held, one would think that if a package had been left behind they would contact the family that rented the place, if only to protect their reputation.

DEAR ABBY: We recently moved to another neighborhood. Most of the residents are elderly. Our closest neighbors are a very nice couple in their 70s. We've gotten along well, but a problem has arisen and I'm not sure how to handle it.

I am a keen do-it-yourself enthusiast. When I get home from work at 2 p.m., I love to go into my workshop and work on one of the many projects I always have going. I'll do this for a couple of hours until my wife and kids get home. I admit, it probably gets a bit noisy with all the power tools, hammers, etc., and I usually leave the door open to let some air in.

My neighbor approached me today and told me his wife usually naps from 2 to 4 every afternoon, and the noise I make is disturbing her. Until he told me that, I had no idea their downstairs bedroom is only a few feet from our communal fence. (My workshop is right up against the fence.)

Would it be rude to suggest she find another time to nap or maybe sleep in another room? I can't imagine having to sit around and waste time every afternoon waiting for her to finish her nap, especially since she has most of the day to nap while I'm at work. This doesn't seem fair to me. My wife thinks I'm being a bit hard, so we agreed to accept your opinion on this. ? D.I.Y. GUY

DEAR D.I.Y. GUY: I'm pretty sure your neighbor's wife takes her naps at the time of day when she needs one, and she would be unable to adjust her sleep schedule to accommodate you. However, your idea of suggesting she try sleeping in another part of the house so she won't be disturbed is a good one.

Or you might agree to a compromise so she starts her mid-day rest period a little earlier, and you start your projects a little later. That way you would both get what you need. Continued...

Greenbo Opens New Scuba Refuge | LEX18.com | Lexington ...

GREENBO STATE RESORT PARK, Ky. (AP) - After year of planning and months of preparation, a 10-acre Scuba Refuge opened Saturday at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park.

Within minutes of the park's newest attraction opening, recreational scuba divers descended below the surface of the lake for the first time. The lake has long been used by local fire departments and industry for training exercises, but Saturday marked the first time recreational diving opened to the public.

Officials hope the refuge will help the park appeal to a new set of users and boost visitorship along with the local economy. Opened on a three-year trial basis, officials hope the attraction will someday become a permanent addition to the activities available to visitors.

Divers must register at the park's office and pay a daily fee of $12. The refuge, which averages 25-feet in depth, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April through October.

Safety guidelines have been established and buoys warn boat traffic away from the area while divers are in the water. Divers must be open-water certified or higher to use the area, or must be accompanied by an instructor with the appropriate certification. The area is open to anglers and boaters when divers are not in the water, as signified by buoys and red and white "diver down" flags.

"I am so excited about this. It has been a long time coming," said Kentucky State Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker. Walker was joined by Ron Brooks, director of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Greenbo Manager Cary Lyle, Greenup County Judge-Executive Bobby Carpenter, State Representative Jill York R-Grayson, state Senator Robin Webb D-Grayson, Bobby Allen, executive director of Greenup County Tourism and president of Friends of Greenbo, and friends member Todd Eastham at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

"It was a community effort, we involved fish and wildlife. There were community meetings. There was compromise, and I think ultimately people are going to realize what a great thing this is for Greenbo State Resort Park, for our region and for our state," said Walker. "I think it's going to be great for the divers as well as the fisherman," she added. The refuge did face some opposition for many anglers.

"I think the big benefit of having a three year trial is that there is always fear about what you don't know. There is speculation about what is going to happen, so I think if you have three years' experience you can see what works, what may need to be adjusted a little bit," said Walker.

"I am hopeful this is going to become a full-time activity here at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park and that we can expand it to some of our other parks. We have people who are diving enthusiasts. We should be able to provide them a safe environment that is compatible with the other water sports and activities," she said.

Some of the first divers in the water on Saturday were Kyle Morgan, Scott Porter and Stephanie Flaugher, with the Grayson Volunteer Fire Department.

"It is good to see it finally opened up," said Morgan, who noted the trio had helped with previous clean ups in preparation for the refuge opening. "Today will just be for recreation," he said.

Morgan said the department's diving team has had to travel up to six hours in the past for training. "It's great to be able to have this here, 15 minutes from your backdoor," he said.

"It is great to have it close to home," agreed Porter, "I?think it's going to be a great asset to Greenbo lake and to the whole region and area."

"There are a lot of divers here in this area," added Flaugher, noting she has friends and neighbors who also travel long distances to dive.

To help entice divers to the park, Greenbo began offering special packages for accommodations. For $77 per person, Friday through Sunday, individuals receive a one-day Scuba pass, one night lodging, a continental breakfast and lunch. From Sunday through Thursday the same package costs $66.50 per person.

Treasury's Lew: Congress needs to pass debt limit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress needs to raise the debt limit and take away the "cloud of uncertainty" about the nation's ability to pay its bills, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The fight over the debt limit in 2011 hurt the economy, even though, in the end, we saw an extension of the debt limit. We saw confidence fall, and it hurt the economy. Congress needs to do its job. It needs to finish its work on appropriation bills. It needs to pass a debt limit," Lew said on NBC's Meet The Press.

Senior lawmakers on Capitol Hill are trying to come up with must-do legislation to keep federal agencies running after Sept. 30 and prevent the possibility of a government shutdown. At issue is what is normally routine: a plug-the-gap measure to fund the government for a few weeks or months until a deal can be worked out on appropriations bills giving agencies their operating budgets for the full 2014 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

However, some Democratic liberals don't want to vote to continue to fund the government at new, lower levels mandated by the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration. And some conservatives are making a last stand against President Barack Obama's new health care law. In addition, Senate Democrats are resistant to a $20 billion spending cut wanted by many Republicans.

Lew maintained that the president won't negotiate over the debt limit but stopped short, however, of saying that Obama would shut down the government.

"Drawing this to brinksmanship is a mistake. It's bad for the economy for it to be brinksmanship," Lew said.
