Players' association gives OK to NHL realignment

(AP) ? The NHL moved a step closer to realignment Thursday as the players' association approved a proposed plan that is set to go into effect next season.

Now that the league has gotten the go-ahead from union chief Donald Fehr, the NHL will only need to get approval from team owners to put it in place.

"The NHL Players' Association confirmed to us today that it has consented to a revised plan for realignment, effective for the 2013-14 season," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "Our next step will be to bring the proposed plan for realignment to the NHL board of governors for its consideration."

Fehr signed off on the plan after discussions with the union's executive board and said the realignment issue will be "re-evaluated following the 2014-15 season."

No official details of the changes have been released by the NHL, but it is widely believed that teams such as Detroit and Columbus will be put into more travel-friendly divisions in the Eastern time zone, and the Winnipeg Jets ? formerly the Atlanta Thrashers ? will leave the Southeast Division for a spot in the Western Conference.

Up until now, there has been an even split of teams with 15 in each conference. Under the new plan, the East will have 16 clubs in it ? making playoff qualification a bit tougher.

The two divisions out West will contain seven teams each. The East divisions will both contain eight.

Each conference will still have eight teams in the playoffs but the setup will be slightly different.

Instead of the current system, under which the top eight teams in each conference make the playoffs, the new plan will award spots to the top three teams in each division along with the next two teams with the best records as wild cards.

The new Atlantic Division in the East will be comprised of Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, New York's Rangers and Islanders, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington. The Central Division will contain Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Out West, the new Midwest Division will feature Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg. The Pacific Division will be made up of Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

Pertino Raises $20M For Cloud-Based Networking Service That ...

Pertino has raised $20 million for its networking technology that small businesses can use to go online and create a network that runs entirely in the cloud. New investor Jafco Ventures led the Series B funding with participation from existing investors, including Norwest Venture Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Pertino raised $8.85 million in a Series A round.

The company, in limited availability since last month, uses Amazon Web Service (AWS), and other cloud services, making it possible for a business of any size to create secure networks without investing in expensive, proprietary big box hardware. The company represents how businesses are creating new markets by leveraging data centers and the mesh of infrastructure that now essentially covers the planet. A software networking company would not have been possible a few years ago. It would have cost a fortune in networking gear and an army of IT professionals.

Pertino CEO Craig Elliott said in an email interview that the company used the Series A funding, which it still has mostly in reserve, for its product development, beta program and limited availability launch. The new funding will help drive its go-to-market build-out.

Pertino is initially focused on the small business market and is employing a direct-via-web sales model that includes a free-version of its product. It is also leveraging the Spiceworks IT community platform as part its go-to-market strategy. Demand is less customer-specific and more community-driven, Elliott said The top ?asks? have been around broader support for desktop and mobile devices.

Big Switch Networks and Nicira, now owned by VMware, are serving the enterprise market with their SDN technology as are Cisco, Citrix and a host of other vendors.

The transition to software based networking will have the same force of impact as online apps have had on the enterprise software market. New companies will innovate and the older, established players will focus on retaining customers. Pertino tells of that shift. It speaks of a disruption to come as hardware gets consumed by software and more companies realize the efficiencies and new capabilities they receive when they can program their infrastructure through services like AWS.

Pertino is a cloud networking company that is bringing to life a radical vision for the future of business networks. One where anyone can build a secure network in minutes that connects people to the IT resources they need from anywhere on the planet. No hardware, upfront investment or expertise required. Pertino is reinventing networking for the cloud era by fusing the power and pervasiveness of the cloud with Software-Defined Networking (SDN), network virtualization, and social-inspired user management. The founders...

How sequester cuts could set back scientific research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF),?Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are among those hit hard by the?sequester cuts that take effect on March 1. ?

An $85-billion across-the-board slash to funding for federal agencies and programs is set to take effect Friday (Mar. 1), and many of the nation's top science agencies will feel the blow.

The cuts, known by the unwieldy term "the sequester," were designed as a last-ditch measure in case Congress couldn't reach a deal to reduce the federal deficit. The cuts were scheduled to take effect Jan. 2, 2013 ? the so-called "fiscal cliff" ? but Congress delayed them until this week.

The cuts apply to both defense and non-defense programs. Non-defense agencies can expect a reduction in funding of about 5 percent, but since that applies to the entire year, it amounts to a cut of more like 9 percent, officials say.

Research agencies will feel the effects particularly keenly. "This is hugely important for everybody who cares about science," Mary Woolley, president of the not-for-profit group Research!America, told LiveScience. [7 Great Dramas in Congressional History]

Who's affected?

The affected agencies include the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA, among others.

The NSF funds about a fifth of all?federally funded basic research?at American colleges and universities, in fields ranging from biology to math and computer science. In response to the sequester cuts, the agency anticipates it will award about 1,000 fewer research grants. This will affect almost 12,000 people, including professors, college students and?K-12 teachers, and could reduce research on clean energy, job-creating advances in manufacturing, cybersecurity efforts and improvements to undergraduate science education, according to a Feb. 4 letter from the NSF to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The NIH, which funds much of the country's biomedical research, will be similarly slammed. The agency will lose an amount of money equivalent to the funding for three major cancer research programs, according to Research!America. Studies that could ultimately drive down the cost of health care, one of the biggest contributors to the deficit, will slow down, Woolley told LiveScience. "It will also potentially add to our national deficit instead of cutting it," Woolley said, adding that the cuts are expected to affect young scientists in particular. [Image Gallery: The Art in Biomedical Research]

The reductions will also impose a nearly $900 million?budget cut on NASA. This will affect the agency's commercial crew program, which is subsidizing human spaceflight systems at Boeing, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and Sierra Nevada. The upshot? The United States will become more reliant on other countries for transportation to the International Space Station, according to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

Others affected by the cuts include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Cuts to these agencies could affect the nation's ability to monitor threats to public health or approve new drugs.

In December 2012, more than 100 scientific societies signed a letter to the White House and Congress in a plea to avoid the funding cuts. "It is important to recognize that federal research and development (R&D) investments are?not?driving our national deficits," the letter stated. "Placing a significant burden on these crucial areas, as sequestration would do, is nothing less than a threat to national competitiveness."

Sequester cuts will hit defense programs even harder, with a 9 percent funding cut (again, applied to the entire fiscal year)?to all programs except military personnel. Affected entities include research programs like the Defense?Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which has funded noteworthy technologies such as computer networking and the development of prosthetic arms.

Not over yet

Currently, government agencies are operating under what's called a "Continuing Resolution," a stopgap measure that will expire March 27. While some agencies have continued to spend the money they were allocated in the?science budget, others are tightening their belts in anticipation of leaner days ahead.

The agencies probably won't be firing people, but there will likely be furloughs (mandatory days of unpaid leave), according to a former congressional budget official who wished to remain anonymous. The furloughs would also apply to contractors, the official said.

Congress must pass legislation later this month once the resolution expires, which could keep the cuts in place, reduce them or even increase the reductions.

(AP) ? Halle Berry says all she wants is a normal life for her daughter.

The Oscar-winning actress had hoped to move to France with 4-year-old Nahla and Berry's fiance, Oliver Martinez. But a judge in her custody dispute with Nahla's father, Gabriel Aubry, prevented that last year.

Berry says she's now trying to figure out how to make life "more normal" for Nahla in the Los Angeles area, where they live.

Says Berry: "That's all I really want, just normalcy for her."

Berry calls herself "resilient" and says she'll figure it out.

Aubry and Berry settled their bitter custody battle last November, soon after Aubry and Martinez got into a fight that left Aubry with a battered face and Martinez with a hand injury. Aubry was arrested but not prosecuted.

Berry stars in the upcoming thriller "The Call."
