I visited the local Trader Vic's to celebrate my birthday with some style. I called early in the day to book a reservation and was told it was booked solid all night, but since it was just me they could get me a seat in the smoking section, provided I'm done by 9 PM. It seemed odd, especially since the dining room, outside of the bar area, was empty all night.
AMBIANCE:
Exotic times two: A faux Polynesian watering hole with tapa walls and overhead dugout canoes, Japanese sake barrels and glass float being patronized by a whole lot o of Arabs in white thawbs and headdresses. Far East meets Middle East. Around the lobby and bar the pretty Filipina waitresses all wore red silk qipao type dresses with high necks, short-sleeves and with high side slits running up to the thigh. In the main dining area I was tended to by a white jacketed waiter who's origin I couldn't discern.
On the downside, for music they played some mellow pop type stuff. Not distracting, but didn't add a thing to the atmosphere.
DRINKS:
Started the night properly with a Mai Tai. It was comparable with the one I had in Trader Vic's Tokyo. I don't know which brand rums were used. Before dinner I also had the Honi Honi which was like bourbon with edge taken off so it went down smoothly. I'll have to go back over my copy of Trader Vic's Food & Drink so I can make it for myself. The drinks were strong and I had to pace myself with them, which given that this is the Middle East I wasn't expecting. A pleasant surprise.
FOOD:
I had the Crab Rangoons in Tokyo, and to this day my best friend won't stop talking about them, so when a waitresses came for my empty drink I asked politely, "Pahingi po ng Crab Rangoons." (Since coming to Bahrain I've had a lot more opportunities to practice Tagalog than I did on Guam.) The Rangoons were as sweet and flavorful as they were in Tokyo and kept at the right temperature from the first bite to last since it's served on a little dish warmed by a candle.
While choosing dinner I was brought a basket of warm, fresh bread sticks and assorted roles. That tasted good enough to have been a meal in itself.
Besides the usual Trader Vic's menu items this one also has a local delicacy called hammour. It's a somewhat-endangered fish. In other words- eat 'em while supplies last!
Still, I did have the Reef and Beef- teriyaki beef and lobster tail with rice. The teriyaki was delicious, the beef was kind of dry but now that I've had it this way, I can't imagine not eating lobster in teriyaki sauce. The mushrooms were especially tasty. It's like the two were made for each other. I got a few bites in before realizing just how unnatural eating teriyaki with a fork is and asked for chopsticks, which they quickly provided.
For dessert I had Tahitian vanilla creme brulle and Tahitian coffee because at Trader Vic's Tahitian seems to be a codeword for 'rum'. The coffee especially was great, the hot coffee and rum was topped by chilled cream poured on over the back of a spoon They went great together and I recommend them as a nice way to end a meal.
SERVICE:
Services was very quick and attentive. Though the main room, despite it's 'full' booking was actually empty save for me and a woman a few tables over. I got my appetizers within five minutes of ordering and the main course came in under 15 minutes. Tokyo took far more time, but it was also packed so I can't fairly compare service.
OTHER RANDOM STUFF:
Noticeably cheaper than the Trader Vic's in Tokyo.

Choosing a legal entity for your new business?
To get the ball rolling, I thought I?d start with one of the most common questions I am asked.

Q. What type of business entity should I choose when starting my new business?
A: The simple answer, and I?m all about keeping it simple, is that you should become a limited liability company (LLC) or a corporation. Operating as a sole proprietorship is crazy. Remember the adage about not putting your eggs all in one basket? Becoming an LLC or corporation allows you to keep your business in a separate basket. And maybe more importantly, it keeps your personal assets insulated from anything that might go wrong in your business.
While tax considerations get lots of attention, what is more important is the structure and purpose of the company. For example, it makes a big difference if the company will be an operating business, or simply used to hold real estate. Equally important considerations are how many owners; the roles of those owners; how the owners expect to get paid; who will put up the cash; and who will run the show.
Corporations make excellent choices for multiple-owner companies. They offer lots of flexibility without the additional cost of extensive operating agreements required for LLCs. On the other hand, an LLC can be perfect for a simple, single-owner business.
Tax talk, like C-Corps and S-Corps, or phrases like ?disregarded entity? and ?pass-through taxation? can be confusing. Don?t let that freak you out. Unfortunately, there?s no way to get around paying taxes. The business structure is far more important. Once you?ve made the choice between an LLC and a corporation, the tax consequences will fall into place. Your lawyer and accountant can help you equalize the tax ramifications, no matter which direction you go.

Aim to have a non-adversarial tax regime, says FM | Firstpost
Finance minister P. Chidambaram is confident of achieving the FY13 direct tax collection target.
India will have a tax regime with non-adversarial approach, Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said in an interaction with the media.
He also expressed confidence that the direct tax target for the current financial year will be met despite the negative impact a slower GDP growth is likely to have on tax mop-up.
He hoped for a healthy advance tax collection.
He said the aim is to keep the tax-GDP ratio at 12 percent.
The country has a direct tax collection target of Rs 5.7 lakh crore.
This is the second media interaction after Chidambaram assumed the finance portfolio, which had given rise to hopes that the government may finally kick start reforms.
In his bid to address the difficult fiscal situation of the country, the minister has set up a committee to pen measures on fiscal consolidation.
The Parthasarathi Shome committee, set up to by the prime minister when he was holding the finance ministry, submitted its draft report on the controversial GAAR on Saturday.
The report has suggested holding back the implementation of GAAR for three years.
Experts are expecting the government to accept all the recommendations by the panel.

Egypt appoints new ambassador to Israel
JERUSALEM (AP) ? Egypt has appointed a new ambassador to Israel, choosing an experienced career diplomat, officials from both countries said, in what some took as sign of positive relations between Israel and Egypt under an Islamist president in Cairo.
Atef Salem el-Ahl has been serving as Egypt's consul in the Israeli resort town of Eilat. He will replace Yasser Reda, whose four-year term ends this summer. Israel's Foreign Ministry and Egypt's state media confirmed the appointment Sunday.
The choice of an envoy familiar with Israel counters concerns in Jerusalem that relations with Cairo could be downgraded with the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
"There is no downgrade," said Eli Shaked, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt. "It shows the new Egypt lends importance to the Israeli relationship ... This is very encouraging."
Israel's relations with Egypt have been tense and uncertain since the ouster last year of longtime President Hosni Mubarak, who maintained the 1979 peace accord between the two nations and cooperated with Israel in a number of spheres.
Israeli concerns deepened with Muslim Brotherhood victories in elections for Egypt's parliament and president. The Islamist group's Mohammed Morsi took office as president on June 30.
Morsi has been cooler toward Israel than his predecessor. The Muslim Brotherhood has said it will abide by the peace accord, a cornerstone of stability for both nations, but has repeatedly called for changes in the limits on troops in the Sinai Peninsula, calling them unacceptable limits on Egyptian sovereignty.
The ties have been further strained by the deteriorating situation in Sinai, where militants have staged multiple attacks on the pipeline delivering gas from Egypt to Israel, lobbed rockets into Israel more frequently and have snuck across the border, killing Israelis.
On Aug. 5, Islamist gunmen brazenly killed 16 Egyptian soldiers before smashing through a fence into Israel. Egypt responded by launching a sweeping operation, using tanks and troops against the militants.
Israel allowed Egypt to increase its military presence in Sinai to carry out the operation and praised the crackdown, but balked once tanks were sent to the area. Some were removed, ostensibly in response to Israel's complaints, and Israel urged greater coordination.
Egypt's Foreign Ministry said el-Ahl's appointment was part of a reshuffle that included 34 other ambassadors. Officially, Israel played down its significance.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor noted the standard nature of the appointment, calling it "totally natural and normal."
El-Ahl is scheduled to submit his credentials to Israel's president in October.
