Take the Stairs: How Self-Discipline and Goal Setting Improve Our ...

An Interview with Rory Vaden

The Carson J Spencer Foundation excited for Rory Vaden and the Take the Stairs tour to come to town on March 4th (Littleton) and 6th (Denver)! We are so honored that he is donating the proceeds for this event to help us expand our youth entrepreneurship program to the state of Colorado and to support our partners at the University of Colorado Depression Center. Rory is a professional speaker and author who promotes self-discipline, and we believe his message ties in well with our mission to help leaders and communities ?sustain a passion for life.? I met Rory last fall at the Colorado?s chapter meeting of the National Speakers Association where he was the featured speaker. I was immediately drawn to his ?true grit? approach to reaching challenging goals and felt his practical advice on making dreams become reality was spot on for our youth who are now transitioning from business plan creation to implementation.

I also know how goal-setting and persistence affect mental health. The Depression-Bipolar Support Alliance suggests that creating the life you want is an excellent way to build resilience against the on-set of depression.

That said, we also know that goal setting when one is depressed is hard:

Dr. Michael Allen, Director of Research at the Depression Center noted that, ?Flexibility in goal-setting often leads to success. We must learn to adapt to what's available even though it's not a perfect match with our interests or goals. A problem in depression is rigidity and perseveration.??

The types of goals we set also influence our well-being.? For example, people who value relationship goals above achievement oriented goals have been found to have a greater sense of wellbeing than people who place achievement goals above relationship goals. ?Our perceived lack of progress towards our goals affects our mood, especially when there are large discrepancies between where we are and where we think we should be. Finally, our self-talk around goal failure can influence our mood, do we say, ?Bummer! I learned some lessons here and can grow from this experience,? or do we say, ?I am a failure. I am always failing. The world is against me.?

For these reasons, I interviewed Rory about his philosophy, book and what we should expect from his presentations on March 4th and 6th.

SALLY: What is Take the Stairs all about?

RORY: The last time you had the option of heading up the escalator or taking the stairs, did you take the stairs? If you're like most people then probably not.? Unfortunately most people have an "escalator" mentality in all areas of their life. They are looking for the shortcut, the easy way, and the overnight success. Yet even in this instant age, success in anything simply comes down to discipline; the discipline to do things you don't want to do.? The book is about the psychology of overcoming procrastination, how to simplify the process of improving our self-discipline, and how to get ourselves to do the things we know we should do when we don't feel like doing them.

SALLY: In your experience, how does goal setting and goal achievement affect self-perception and mood?

RORY: The most disciplined people in the world have determined that the best strategy is to put your self-esteem into your work habits and not your outcomes. In other words they focus only on what they can control and let the rest of life happen as it may. This is important because it means we can have confidence in ourselves that is unconditional and not affected by the positive or negative circumstances we may be facing in life as long as we are working as hard as possible on the things that we have in our power. I?d encourage people to focus on the next step in their path. What is the best thing is that they can do to influence that step? I tell people not put so much pressure on themselves about whether or not their goal may come to fruition exactly as hoped.

SALLY: What can people expect when they come to the event?? Who should come?

RORY: Everyone!? From high school students and their parents to professionals in the community, everyone can benefit from improved self-discipline.? I?ll be teaching the 7 strategies of simplifying self-discipline that are in the book.? Plus, by being there you?re supporting the Carson J Spencer Foundation?s Fire Within Program.? I look forward to being there!

This event is for people who want a more fulfilling lifestyle?those who are looking to take a different approach in 2012. My goal with this event will be to change the way audience members look at their path to success?each dream is achievable, but short cuts are not an option. We?re going to talk about why taking the stairs is the only route to the top.

Santorum's gamble pays off (AP)

ST. CHARLES, Mo. ? Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum made a calculated decision a few weeks ago.

The cash-strapped candidate chose to skip ahead in the primary calendar to court conservative electorates in the three states that voted Tuesday ? Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri ? while GOP front-runner Mitt Romney and chief challenger Newt Gingrich battled each other in the expensive state of Florida.

Santorum's gamble paid off. He won all three.

He broke a four-state losing streak Tuesday by aggressively courting conservative activists, pastors and tea party leaders to overcome Romney's superior organization and fundraising ? and challenge Gingrich for the title as the more conservative alternative to the former Massachusetts governor.

Santorum won bragging rights after placing first in Missouri's nonbinding primary. He also won the caucuses in Minnesota. And then he won Colorado.

"Conservatism is alive and well in Missouri and Minnesota," Santorum roared to cheers of "We pick Rick" from a crowd gathered here hours before Colorado gave him a third victory.

"I don't stand here to claim to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney," he added. "I stand here to be the conservative alternative to Barack Obama."

To some degree, Santorum's wins were a vindication of his strategy to bypass traditional advertising and instead lean on grassroots leaders, neighbor-to-neighbor efforts, and private meetings with conservative kingmakers in the trio of states that voted Tuesday ? just as he did in Iowa, where he was declared the winner a few weeks ago.

Over the past two weeks, Santorum visited the three states' most conservative communities to draw swelling crowds. And the leaders of Santorum's successful Iowa campaign descended on Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri to court pastors and tea party leaders alike.

Among his many stops in the past two weeks was a visit to the Minnesota factory that stitches his campaign's signature sweater vests.

Santorum badly trailed Romney's superior organization in each state.

But everywhere he went, he urged his smaller ? though more enthusiastic ? crowds to spread his tea party-leaning message.

"This is about the founders' freedom. This is a country that believes in God-given rights," he said at a victory celebration. "Ladies and gentlemen, freedom is at stake in this election."

He also emphasized his longtime opposition to abortion rights.

In recent days, Santorum had doubled down on the Obama administration's recent requirement that church-affiliated employers cover birth control for their workers regardless of the institutions' religious beliefs.

His advisers claimed that this tact lets him promote his own Catholic faith, cast people of faith as victims and cast Obama as a big-government, power-hungry and anti-Christian leader ? all in one paragraph of a speech.

As he began his Tuesday, he told a gathering in the conservative stronghold of Colorado Springs ? home base for the Christian group Focus on the Family ? that Obama was trampling on their faith.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it's not just your economic rights," said Santorum, vowing to make the issue a centerpiece of his White House bid. "It's your freedom of religion. It's your freedom of speech."

The race now heads to Maine's caucuses, which end Saturday.

Santorum advisers had been largely ignoring Maine and conceding the state to Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, a popular figure among the party's libertarian wing who has yet to win a contest. Maine's drawn-out process was a system Santorum's inner-circle didn't expect to do well in, and they have adopted a strategy that avoids spending money on places where there is no viable path to a victory.

Santorum is eyeing competing next in Arizona, Washington state and the Super Tuesday states of Georgia, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Tennessee. The campaign is all but writing off Alaska, Georgia, Idaho and Vermont and isn't on the ballot in Virginia.

Money remains a concern for Santorum even though his team has said he has raised $1 million online in the past week. He's hoping that his victories Tuesday open the fundraising spigot even more.

His team was already heading to the next state where Santorum hopes to do well, Washington state. It holds its caucuses March 3.

Santorum has vowed to go all the way to Tampa's GOP convention ? even if he isn't the nominee.

Stem Cell Therapy Shows Promise for Stroke, Studies Say (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 1 (HealthDay News) -- Treating stroke patients with stem cells taken from their own bone marrow appears to safely help them regain some of their lost abilities, two small new studies suggest.

Indian researchers observed mixed results in the extent of stroke patients' improvements, with one study showing marked gains in daily activities, such as feeding, dressing and movement, and the other study noting these improvements to be statistically insignificant. But patients seemed to safely tolerate the treatments in both experiments with no ill effects, study authors said.

"The results are encouraging to know but we need a larger, randomized study for more definitive conclusions," said Dr. Rohit Bhatia, a professor of neurology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, and author of one of the studies. "Many questions -- like timing of transplantation, type of cells, mode of transplantation, dosage [and] long-term safety -- need answers before it can be taken from bench to bedside."

The studies are scheduled to be presented Wednesday and Thursday at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting in New Orleans.

Stem cells -- unspecialized cells from bone marrow, umbilical cord blood or human embryos that can change into cells with specific functions -- have been explored as potential therapies for a host of diseases and conditions, including cancer and strokes.

In one of the current studies, 120 moderately affected stroke patients ranging from 18 to 75 years old were split into two groups, with half infused intravenously with stem cells harvested from their hip bones and half serving as controls. About 73 percent of the stem cell group achieved "assisted independence" after six months, compared with 61 percent of the control group, but the difference wasn't considered statistically significant.

In the other study, presented by Bhatia, 40 patients whose stroke occurred between three and 12 months prior were also split into two groups, with half receiving stem cells, which were dissolved in saline and infused over several hours. When compared to controls, stroke patients receiving stem cell therapy showed statistically significant improvements in feeding, dressing and mobility, according to the study. On functional MRI scans, the stem cell recipients also demonstrated an increase in brain activity in regions that control movement planning and motor function.

Neither study yielded adverse effects on patients, which could include tumor development.

But Dr. Matthew Fink, chief of the division of stroke and critical care neurology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, said that the therapy's safety is the only thing the two studies seemed to demonstrate.

"The thing to keep in mind is that these are really phase one trials," said Fink, also a professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College. "I'm concerned that people get the idea that now stem cell treatment is available for stroke, and that's not the case."

Fink noted that the cells taken from study participants' hip bones can only be characterized as "bone marrow aspirates" since the authors didn't prove that actual stem cells were extracted.

"They haven't really analyzed if they're stem cells and what they turn into when they go into circulation," he added. "The best way to look at this is, it's very preliminary . . . when patients come to me to talk about it, I'm going to tell them it's years away before we know if this is going to work."

Studies presented at scientific conferences should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Downton Abbey, Season 2

Conceits like the eeeeevil of Mrs. Bates, or the passionate discussions of czars between Sybil and Branson, or O?Brien being struck by remorse and feeling suddenly protective of a woman she assaulted via soap just one season ago, are what make Downton what it is for me: that is, a program that I find almost obscenely enjoyable despite the fact that in many ways it?s quite terrible. Especially viewed in light of the last 10 years, in which television has been transformed from sniffed-at trash to, at its best, rich and complex art?indeed, the preeminent popular art form of our time. Downton seems an odd throwback to an era of proudly square entertainment, in which villains cackle and smoke, heroes suffer but glow from within, and no scene passes without a Very Serious Look.
